Christmas at the coast

‘A fire glows from the hearth, lights twinkle on a Christmas tree and two small children stand on tip-toes to see over the windowsill at the snow gently falling outside.’

It’s the picture on a Christmas card but it’s not how one would describe Christmas in South Africa!

While our friends in the North huddle around the fire, we have the luxury of stretching out in the sun. So let’s toss the fake snow, woollen stockings and take Christmas to the coast this summer!

Here are some decorating ideas we found which could help you create a festive coastal Christmas.

Cool blue crockery and silver décor is ideal for an outdoor Christmas celebration. Look for ornamental silver shells, starfish and spray a few pine cones with glittery silver for a fresh take on the traditional Christmas table.

Don’t let the sun set on your party; light the way with lanterns and enjoy cool summer evenings outdoors.

We love this modern Christmas tree created with white string lights. The absence of pine needles means it’s no mess; a real plus when you already have beach sand to contend with. Learn how to recreate this by following Martha Stewart’s tutorial here.

If you opt for this minimal Christmas tree, you could put leftover Christmas baubles on display in bowls and vases or create a stunning ribbon garland like the one we found on Better Homes & Gardens.

We love gold but you could try silver and shades of blue or purple for a fresh seaside look.

Cut ribbon to the desired garland length and cut shorter pieces for each bauble. Wrap the shorter pieces of ribbon around the main ribbon and tie a bow or knot to secure the Christmas decorations. Tie a cluster of ornaments on either end and, if you like, add a bow in the same colour or a complementary colour to finish the look on either end.

Alternatively, cut out the letters for the words ‘peace’ or ‘joy’, paint in a solid colour, metallic or glitter finish, punch holes in the top of each letter, string onto ribbon and drape from a mantel.

We love the bowl of shells on the coffee table, as seen in this picture. You could place small silver baubles and glass crystals between the shells to add seasonal sparkle.

And if you still love traditional Christmas decor, use red and gold to spice up a navy and white summer home. The simplicity of the colour scheme ensures that you maintain the classic nautical look without losing the pleasure of all the Christmas trimmings!
