A Childhood Interior Design Dream Come True

For most of us, memories of the family home we grew up in evoke feelings of warmth, comfort, and security. Whilst much of this nostalgia focuses on moments such as special holidays, family get-togethers, and everyday routines, we don’t pay much attention to the backdrop on which these memories play out. The enveloping softness of a lounge sofa, the stature of the dining table, the presence of art pieces, and the gentle light that bathed our beds, but our parents’ interior design and décor choices imprint our minds and, for some of us, influence our choices when we, as adults try to replicate that same warm, welcoming feeling in our homes.

This is most definitely true for Sume Loubser, who, designing the interior of her first home in Durbanville, Cape Town, leaned into the choices that her mother, Marlise made in their family home. ‘Having grown up in a home with shutters, it became a cherished dream of mine to someday adorn my own home with shutters and blinds,’ says Sume. ‘So, when my partner and I purchased our first home, we contacted AMERICAN shutters, the same company my mother trusted.’
