For this year’s Decorex stand, AMERICAN shutters® collaborated with interior and product designer, Liam Mooney, a well known and respected designer with an impressive portfolio of commercial and residential projects.

Liam and AMERICAN shutters met a few months ago when Liam asked the organisers of Design Joburg 2018 to approach AMERICAN shutters to supply shutters for his ‘Room on View’ exhibition.

“Once I got to know Liam and had a closer look at his designs and projects, I realised he was the perfect designer for our 2018 Decorex stand,” says Karina Palmer, interior designer and marketing director of AMERICAN shutters. “For the past three years, we have partnered with, and showcased top South African interior designers on our exhibition stand, and I was thrilled when Liam agreed to work with us this year.”

Liam’s self-described style – layered, comfortable, eclectic and contemporary – was perfectly represented in his design for the stand. Inspired by the versatility of AMERICAN shutters’ products, he layered a mixture of both old and new products to create a warm and homely space that attracted and interested exhibition visitors.

This design, like all of Liam’s work reflects his belief that design should “focus on interiors that just feel right, opposed to ones that strive to be right”.

We had the opportunity to ask Liam a few questions, the answers to which we are sure will inspire:

What do you think is defining interior design in 2018?
“There are so many points of view out there, that it’s impossible to highlight just one. I think we’re moving to a place where individuals have the courage to create spaces that resonate with themselves on a personal level.”

What is your favourite AMERICAN shutters’ range and why?
“I enjoy the versatility offered by the Security Shutter range.”

What is your advice on how to incorporate shutters in interior design?
“I think, when layered with blinds and curtains, shutters create a beautiful and interesting window moment. They’re really very versatile.”
